About Us
The Shelter Whisperer Project Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit built on a simple belief: every shelter pet deserves a voice and a second chance. Based in Yuma, Arizona, we work to reach animals before they ever have to enter a shelter at all — connecting people, fosters, and resources to close the gap between animals in crisis and the homes ready to take them in. It’s a small, dedicated team with a big goal: giving every Yuma County pet the chance they deserve.
Our Story
The Shelter Whisperer Project began with a simple idea — that every dog and cat deserves someone rooting for them before they ever reach a shelter kennel. What started as one person’s passion for rescue has grown into a full nonprofit, built on the belief that stories change hearts, and hearts change outcomes for Yuma County’s animals. Today, that same passion drives everything we do, as we keep building a stronger safety net for Yuma County’s animals, one story at a time.
Our Mission
Our mission and goal is simple: to give shelter and rescue animals a voice, and give them a second chance before they’re ever counted as just another statistic. We call it the “step before shelter” — reaching animals early, sharing their stories, and connecting them with the people and resources that can change their path. If you’re thinking about a shelter surrender, call us first — we may be able to offer your pet a second chance before the shelter, one pet at a time.
Our Approach
We’re 100% foster-based, which means every animal in our care lives in a real home instead of a cage while they wait for their forever family and get their second chance. We work closely with the Yuma Humane Society and local partners, relying on volunteers, fosters, and donors to make every rescue possible.
This flexible model lets us respond quickly to pets in crisis and enables us to grow our foster animal network as more Yuma County animals need us.
