At the Humane Society of Yuma she was known as Sonja, but her adopter saw something far more special — a little French girl named Etienne Camille. This sweet Yorkie -Dachshund mix arrived timid and afraid, pressing herself against the wall as if she was trying to stay out of everyone’s way. Her adopter looked at her and simply said — you do not have to do that anymore. You are home. And from that moment, Etienne Camille began to bloom into exactly who she was always meant to be. Then came the moment that said it all — her adopter called her name, and she came running around the corner. She knew her name. She was home.
She came with a shelter name but her adopter knew right away she was something more — a little French girl named Ethernet Camille, full of personality and waiting for someone to see it. This Dachshund mix may be small but she carries herself with all the charm and spirit her name suggests. She went from pressing against a wall in a shelter kennel to owning every room she walks into. When her adopter called her name for the first time she came running around the corner, it was a moment no one in that house will never forget. Etienne did not just find a home she found herself.
When she first arrived she was afraid and timid, hugging the wall and shrinking in the corners staying out of everyone’s way. Shea had been hurt before. Her adopter looked at knelt down and told her gently that she didn’t have to do that anymore and no one is ever going to hurt you again. And that she was safe, she was wanted, and she was home. Something shifted in that moment. The little dog that shrieked in corners slowly learned that she did not need to shrink at all. She knew exactly who she was and were she belonged.
If you ask her adopter what Eti is like today, the answer comes easily — she gives a thousand kisses. The timid, fearful little girl from the shelter has become an affectionate, joyful compan who has fully embraced the love surrounding her. She responds to her name and excitement every single time, rounding that corner like she has been doing it her whole life. She is proof the animals do not forget kindness — they respond to it, grow from it, and give it back in evey way they know how. Etienne is one our greatest success stories, not because her life changed, but because she let it.
